Rene works with a diverse array of materials: wood, copper, handmade paper, Precious Metal Silver Clay, sterling silver, polymer clay, and found objects. Not only does she work exclusively with each media and the obvious techniques, she also combines them in items that are functional, ornamental, whimsical, and simply enjoyable for their own attributes.

Trained in a full range of media at Iowa State University in the curriculum of Design, she studied with leaders in their fields such as Elsie Screenevasm, who was at the helm of the Surface Design movement in the 70's, and Shirley E. Held, weaver and author of Weaving, A Handbook of the Fiber Arts which was used in American universities as the weaving textbook.

At Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, she was exposed to world-renowned artists/teachers, for example: Fred Woell (jewelry), Dale Chihuly (glass blowing), and Olga De Amoral (fiber art).

Later she encountered Henry Nolla (master carver) and Roy Vickers (First Nations artist) and was influenced by the West Coast Styles.

To further round out her education, she has combined travel with study: Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (copper), Precious Metal Clay at Oregon College of Crafts (PMC Certification Program with Fred Woell), Marilyn Wold (Hawaiian paper making), and Pablo Amaringo (painting deep in the Amazon Jungle with ethno botanists), Radianne Solvita, in Sedona (Lucid Dreaming and Literature), Victoria School of Writing (Fiction), and Camosun College (Build Your Own Home).

Immersed in the presence of creativity she works in her two studios at her charming country acreage surrounded by tall trees.

Open: April - August, 10-2, W-F, & by appointment.
